If you possess an inactive Gmail or Google email account, it is advisable to log in promptly before it faces deletion. Starting in December, Google will commence the deletion of personal email accounts that have remained inactive for two years, along with any associated content, encompassing Google Workspace products such as Google Docs, Photos, and more.
Why this move?
To enhance security and minimize the risk of compromised accounts, Google announced that starting in December, inactive accounts not accessed or signed into for at least two years may be deleted, along with their contents. This measure aims to address the potential vulnerabilities associated with forgotten or unattended accounts, often characterized by outdated or reused passwords, lack of two-factor authentication, and reduced user-initiated security checks.
If you haven’t logged into an account since 2021, be aware that Google may delete it in December. To prevent potential misuse of deleted accounts, Google clarified that the Gmail address associated with a deleted account cannot be used when creating a new Google account.
Google will notify users multiple times in the months leading up to deletion, sending notifications to both the account email address and the recovery email if provided. This proactive approach aims to inform users and provide an opportunity to retain their accounts before deletion occurs.
Here’s what you can do
According to Google, it’s important to log in to your Google account at least once every two years to maintain its active status. Accounts or services that have been recently signed in are classified as active and will not be subject to deletion.
To enhance account security and facilitate recovery, it is recommended to link your account to a recovery email address that you can readily access. This becomes crucial for password recovery or authentication if you forget your password.
If your Google account is deleted, access to it and the associated products will be permanently lost. Additionally, it’s important to note that the email address linked to the deleted account cannot be reused to create a new account.
